China’s Chevy Automobile - First Elecric Car S18

Chery Automobile, China’s largest homegrown carmaker, has debuted a new plug-in hybrid model that it says can run up to 94 miles on a single charge. The S18, with a top speed of 75mph, can be fully charged at a home electrical outlet within four to six hours, Chery said in a statement posted on its website.

“Our electric vehicle uses the world’s latest technology, highly efficient energy conservation and is easy to use,” Yuan Tao, the company’s deputy general manager, said at a ceremony held earlier this week at Chery’s headquarters in eastern China’s Anhui province. Chery uses iron-phosphate-based lithium-ion batteries for S18, which can be fully charged in four to six hours and 80% charged in half an hour, it said. The firm did not say when it would start mass production of the model or whether it had secured orders.

Chery said its car will be priced at a level that is “very suitable for families to buy.” The company, which is No. 1 in sales volume among Chinese auto makers that don’t have a foreign joint-venture partner, didn’t say when the car would be available

China Chery Automobile

Chery Automobile is an automobile manufacturer in People's Republic of China.

Mercedes-Benz 190E : Top Legendary Cars

It is owned by the local government of Wuhu, and produced about 188,000 vehicles in 2005. Chery was founded in 1997 to prop up the economy in remote Wuhu. The company was not able to obtain a license to produce vehicles for sale in all of China, but was saved by an order for taxis by the local government. In 2001, Shanghai Automotive Industry Company (SAIC) invested in the company, allowing it to use SAIC's national retail sales license. In 2003, Chery founded a research and development organization, quickly designing its own 3- and 4-cylinder engines. However, Chery was also sued by GM Daewoo for copying that company's Chevrolet Spark (a.k.a. Daewoo Matiz). Chery claims that they licensed the vehicle design prior to General Motors' purchase of Daewoo. Chery was able to scout a number of key engineers from South Korea's Daewoo motor during its bankruptcy proceeding in 2001~2002, who took a complete set of plans with them and went on to create Daewoo vehicles at Chery. The copied vehicles are Daewoo Matiz(Chery QQ) mini car and Daewoo Magnus(Chery Oriental Son) mid-size sedan. They are exact replicas of Daewoos, being able to swap door panels and key components between them. Both Matiz and Magnus are currently sold as Chevrolets outside of South Korea and Vietnam. Its expected that the Chery QQ wil hit the markets in europe in 2006, the introduction price is expected at 5000,= Euro's, making it the cheapest car in Europe together with the Dacia Logan. In 2005, Chery started export of right hand drive vehicles to Malaysia. The rebadged Chery A15, is to be powered by BMWs Tritec engine.

Despite its humble beginning, Chery has achieved many unlikely breakthroughs and become the fastest growing independent automaker in China. Chery is committed to developing world-class automobiles via cooperation with top engineering firms such as Lotus Engineering of the U.K, and Mitsubishi Automotive Engineering of Japan, and leading auto designing firms such as Bertone and Pininfarina of Italy. In its relentless pursuit of quality, Chery adopts DURR Paint Systems in its paint shop in 2004. In 2005, as a groundbreaking event for Chinese automotive industry, Chery starts producing China¡¯s first high-performance Euro IV engines in cooperation with AVL List of Austria. In addition, in J.D.Power 2004 China Initial Quality Study, Chery QQ finishes NO.1 in compact car segment. With an ambition to become a global player, Chery has so far launched its products in 29 countries. For the time being, Chery is developing a new line-up of products aiming at auto markets in the U.S and EU. In 2005, a strategic partnership is formed between Chery and Vesionary Vehicles of the USA for launching Chery products in North America in 2007.

Plastic Bottles - Potential Cancer Risk

In recent studies, it has been found the certain plastic reusable bottles may be a cancer risk. The risk is due to a chemical called BPA (Bisphenol A) that can be released when the bottle is washed, heated, and/or re-used. This impacts adults as well as children. Here are a very ways to limit the risk of BPA in plastic bottles:

Look for "BPA-free" claims on toys, baby bottles and containers. A lot of companies are starting to roll out BPA free baby bottles, bottle liners, and re-usable containers.

Avoid polycarbonate and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastics, both of which contain BPA. At the bottom of the plastic, there should be a recylcing code. Anything with code 7 is at risk. Alternatives include polyethylene plastic (also labeled PETE) and containers marked with recycling code 1, 2 (HDPE) and 4 (LDPE). Polypropylene (recycling code 5, or PP) are also safe.

If you use hard polycarbonate plastics (Nalgene bottles, baby bottles, sippy cups), do not heat or use them for warm or hot liquids. This includes running in the dishwasher. Nalgene just recently did a recall around a lot of their bottles.

Do not wash polycarbonate plastic containers in the dishwasher with harsh detergents.

CHINA BAD TOYS

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mattel Inc. is recalling 1.5 million Chinese-made toys worldwide because their paint may contain too much lead -- the latest in a deluge of product safety scares that have tainted the "made in China" brand.

The recalled toys made for Mattel's Fisher-Price unit include popular preschool characters like Elmo and Big Bird along with dozens of other items.

They were made by a contract manufacturer in China using a non-approved paint pigment containing lead, Mattel said on Wednesday.

Lead paint has been linked to health problems in children, including brain damage.

Mattel is asking U.S. consumers and sellers to return 967,000 plastic toys and is recalling another 533,000 from other countries, including Britain, Canada and Mexico.

Mattel's senior vice president of worldwide quality assurance, Jim Walter, said the recall could hit all its markets and traced the problem to a single manufacturer.

"The disappointment here was we had a single contract manufacturer that we had a long-standing relationship with, who did not do what is required by Mattel," Walter said.

The recall comes amid heightened concern worldwide about the safety of China's exports. Many of the previous problem products have involved smaller manufacturers, but now a major company in a sensitive sector has been hit.

"Nobody wants to face that PR nightmare," said Kent Kedl, the Shanghai head of Technomic Asia, which advises companies sourcing out of China. "But the reality is that things slip through the cracks. And the cracks are a little bit bigger here in China."

Walter said the toy maker had launched an investigation. Mattel had stopped producing and shipping toys from that manufacturer, but said it would wait for the findings of the investigation to decide whether to keep doing business with it.

"GOOD AND SAFE"

China has fought back against consumer concern by promising tough quality controls but also accusing foreign media of "alarmist" reporting that could stoke a protectionist backlash.

"Over 99 percent of China's export products are good and safe," Commerce Minister Bo Xilai said in Beijing on Wednesday, according to the ministry Web site (www.mofcom.gov.cn).

"We hope that concerned parties can treat Chinese products objectively, fairly and rationally. Don't let this damage the normal development of trade."

In the United States, the Fisher-Price toys were sold nationwide at retail stores between May and August, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Mattel said U.S. consumers should contact Fisher-Price to arrange a product return.

Mattel said it became aware of the problem in early July and was working with retailers to remove the toys from shelves. It also said it was intercepting shipments to avert further sales.

Of the nearly 1 million products recalled from the U.S. market, Mattel said about 30 percent had reached store shelves.

It declined to identify the manufacturer. In China, offices of Mattel's suppliers referred inquiries back to its head office.

President George W. Bush has ordered a review of U.S. rules intended to keep out harmful imports following a series of scares involving Chinese goods this year.

The United States has stepped up inspections of goods from China after a chemical additive in pet food caused the death of some pets. Toxic ingredients were also found in Chinese fish and toothpaste exports, while the deaths of patients in Panama were blamed on improperly labeled Chinese chemicals mixed into cough syrup.

Chinese-made toy trains were recalled in the United States in June because some may have contained lead paint.

Kedl, the consultant, said China was too important as a manufacturing base for foreign companies to abandon, but they were likely to tread more carefully.

"Multinationals will be more cautious, re-evaluating the cost of doing business in China, but no, they will not quit China."

(Additional reporting by Chris Buckley and Kirby Chien in Beijing)

Why are all these dangerous products still coming in? We have had bad pet food, bad people food and bad children's toys. No one seems able to stop them because no one is monitoring our safety! We have few person who do the actual inspections - in fact there are fewer food safety inspectors than back in 2002 and we import more and more stuff - with fewer and fewer inspections!

This from an administration that pretends to be concerned with public safety - when they are in reality more concerned with scare tactics and keeping people afraid.

After all - Fear is good for republicans...
